Pearls of Wisdom....

Sometimes you work on a piece even though you know it is flawed because there is something about it that still has a hold upon you. This is one of those pieces, it is flawed, I find that sometimes that I get so lost in the details that proportions get skewed or the composition suffers. This piece reveals, at least to me, that I still have much to learn as an artist.

I find that when I draw I am sometimes like a necrotic surgeon cutting away at white space as though it was some cancerous infection. Whittling away sometimes a square inch at a time without stepping back and considering the overall effect. Often these pieces would end up in the trash and I would begin again until I would end at a point that it did not seem to measure up to some sort of perfectionist ideal I had in mind. Not that being a perfectionist is bad, but there were so many unfinished pieces I had shelved that I had nothing to show for my endeavors.

When I began to push through that barrier and actually finish pieces, even though flawed I at least felt a sense of accomplishment at having a finished work.

So enough meanderings about my workmanship, this piece is of a reoccurring theme of the Hermit that still roams about my subconscious in search of hidden knowledge. The full title was going to be "Often Pearls of Wisdom Come from the Most Unexpected Places." But Deviant doesn't allow for so many words nor would the border seem to be able to retain all of that phrase aesthetically. I intend to make a border specifically for this piece and also digitally color it when I find the time. It may or may not help the piece but inspite of its flaws, this was a fun work.
